    在外贸圈有件怪事,就是客户不回邮件,特别是新手,更是如此,为什么这么说呢?
    It’s very weird in foreign trade that customers don’t make responses to especially freshmen’s emails. Why?

    我想对于新手来说,拿着老板给的或者是摘抄来的一大堆邮箱地址,Ctrl+c,再接着Ctrl+v,一个邮件同时发送几十上百个地址,肯定不陌生吧,省事倒是省事了,可惜,你做的是无用功。你自己已经放弃治疗了,还指望能够活过来吗?

    I believe that those freshmen must have use the same email to send to lots of email addresses. It saves trouble, yes indeed. But it’s a pity that it’s all in vain. It’s you who choose to give up so you are hopeless already.

    你要知道公司的邮箱运营商都是会有设置的,会将携带某一数字以上的发送或抄送地址一律自动识别为垃圾邮件拒收的。

    建议:老老实实地根据自己的产品选择客户逐一发送,切忌急躁,急功。

    False advertising

    我们外贸业务员为了提高客户的邮件打开率,邮件标题也经常是绞尽脑汁。为了吸引客户,经常会使用“业务合作”、“最新产品”这样的字样。殊不知,这些被用来“勾引”客户的标题,早已经是ESP的封杀目标。因为类似这样的词汇,推销的性质十分明显,很多骗子公司和卖票的奸商都是这类标题的狂热使用者。
    To attract customers to open their emails, foreign traders have tried their utmost on title of mails. They often use words like “business cooperation”, “the latest product” but they hardly realize that thesealluring titles have become the target of ESP to ban. Because the intention to sell products is much too obvious and many cheaters like to use such titles.

    建议:内容言简意赅,突出独特卖点,或者找一个较独特的切入点。
    Suggestion: The contents need to be more concise and your selling point is also needed.
    例如:
    For example:

    1) Manufacturer of bamboo flooring/Supplier of Wal-Mart;
    2) Re: Ecotimber/product catalogue /brief intro.;
    3) John, are you ok with your * suppliers?
    4) Is there a middle man draining your profit. Get rid of them, it’s information age.
    5) Regarding MP3, Can you get your questions answered on the spot?

    缺斤短两
    Incomplete information

    打开邮件,提供的都是残缺不完整的信息,最蠢的就是故弄玄虚给一串一串链接的,须知,买家最缺少的就是好奇心,很少会有心情和时间去根据你的残缺描述去 Google 的。
    It’s very idiotic to provide fragmentary information, such as intermittent links. You should know that customers are not so curious because they don’t have spare time for research.

    建议:简单完整的产品描述、准确齐备的联系方式,自己公司产品的网址、发信人的姓名职务等个人信息缺一不可。
    Suggestion: Concise and complete product description, accurately complete contacts, website of your company products and sender’s name and title are all indispensable.

    Struggle in vain

    在盗版横行的中国没感觉,但在欧美,不是每个电脑里都有一大堆应用软件的。我告诉你大名鼎鼎的 PHILIPS 公司有几个小部门的电脑里办公软件甚至只装一个简化版的 WORD 和 EXCEL 你信吗?
    In China, pirated softwares are everywhere and you may not feel something wrong. But in Europe and America, not every computer is installed with a bunch of utility softwares. Do you believe that there are some small departments in PHILIPS in which computers are only installed with simplified WORD and EXCEL.

    可惜,这就是事实,微软的 OFFICE 软体在欧洲是相当的昂贵,基本上没有电脑在卖出时是预装OFFICE 或解压缩软件的,都是要企业或个人自己掏钱购买,很多小一些的企业真的是没有全套的新版 OFFICE 软体和最新的办公软体,你做的漂漂亮亮的产品附件打都打不开有什么用呢?
    Unfortunately, this is what it is. Microsoft Office software is very high in price and most of the computers are not installed with Office and Winrar which require enterprises or individual to pay for them. Large number of small enterprises can’t afford full-set Office software. So what can you do when you even can’t open your accessory?

    建议:学会制作和使用 PDF 文档是个好办法,欧洲基本上所有的电脑出售时都携带 PDF 阅读软体的,或者制作成 JPG 格式图片也可以。
    Suggestion: It’s a good idead to make and use PDF files. In Europe, almost every computer is installed with PDF reading software or you can just make JPG image.

    言简意赅不代表一笔带过,发给客户的邮件要简单扼要展示出你推介产品的优势和独特卖点,每封邮件都要精心构筑你的邮件用语,找高手看看,这时候语法错误是要不得的,很可能会让客户错误理解你的表述。
    Conciseness doesn’t mean you can skip it. You can show your advantages of products and its selling point. What’s more, you should avoid grammtical errors which probably misunderstand your customer.
    建议:写完邮件自己看一下,假设自己是买家看到了这封邮件会怎样?
    Suggestion: Read the email after you finish it. What do you think if you were the purchaser?

    根本不知道客户需要什么,也不了解客户最近的经营状况,一封邮件走天下。
    You don’t even know what customers need and their operating conditions. You just send the same email again and again.

    建议:案头工作必不可少,发邮件前登陆意向客户的网站,或 Google 客户相关的信息,并适当地在联系邮件里提示一点你最近了解的关于客户的资讯,一般而言,买家都会很认真看你的邮件和提供的信息。
    Suggestion: It’s very important that you do some preparation work. You can visit their websites before sending emails or you can Google customers’ information so that you can mention something about that. Generally speaking, they will read your emails seriously.

    这样的开发信对很多新手来说,算是言简意赅的典范了。但是毫无亮点!

    开发信中,很多新手容易犯的问题是措辞表达不够通畅。另外尽量避免过多使用第一人称主动语态,比如很多新手喜欢使用 We.... We... We..  这样做其实很不妥:
